Plot summary: Francesco is born in a wealthy family. In his youth he is witness to the devastating defeat from the Perugia province and experiences for the first time the realities of life. Captured as a prisoner of war, he is released after payment of a large indemnity by his father. In prison Francesco is introduced to the Holy Bible by a fellow prisoner. This event produces a profound spiritual impact on Francesco who then gives away all his wealth to the poor.
Comment: The film is a remake of a TV film which Cavani had made 22 years earlier. In the former film the director focused on the material aspects of Francesco’s life and his social circumstances. But in her 1988 remake she tries to deal with the man’s spiritual life. Whereas in the past for Cavani the saint was a person who promoted social justice, in her new work she depicts the saint as a person who preaches God and spirituality.
